Polypodium
The genus Polypodium, or Polypody, has a worldwide distribution and consists of 100-125 species. Most occur in the American tropics, with a few species found in temperate regions elsewhere in America, as well as Europe, Asia, and Africa.
A total of eleven of species are endemic to the contiguous United States, with five of these endemic to California: Polypodium californicum (which is only found in the State of California), Polypodium calirhiza, Polypodium glycyrrhiza, Polypodium hesperium, and Polypodium scouleri. Hawai`i has a single endemic species, and several species are to be found in Alaska and Canada.
