Lophosoria

Lophosoria quadripinnata (common name Palmilla) is the only living species of the genus, and is endemic to the Antilles, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Equador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, southern Argentina, and Chile (including the Juan Fernández Islands).

The genus was described in 1847, and fossils of Lophosoria are recorded from the Early Cretaceous Epoch (100 to 146 million years ago), and were once widespread throughout Gondwana, with fossils found on the Arctic Peninsula, Patagonia, the Falklands Plateau, southwestern Africa, and Australia.

Synonym: Polypodium quadripinnatum.
