Calochlaena

The genus Calochlaena was first described in 1922 and consists of six species, which are endemic to Malesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, and eastern Australia.

Calochlaena are in the Dicksoniaceae family (which also includes Cibotium, Culcita, Cystodiopteris, Dicksonia, and Thyrsopteris).

They are all large ferns with fronds as long as 1.5 meters (5 feet) and grow in damp, open locations.

Fossils belonging to the genus Calochlaena have been found in Australia in rocks dating from the Late Cretaceous Epoch (65 to 100 million years ago) and early Tertiary Period (1.8 to 65 million years ago).
